Frequently Asked Questions
Have a question about working with us? Below you’ll find answers about getting started, our pediatric nutrition services and programs, insurance and payment, and visits. Don’t see yours? Book a free intro call and we’ll walk through it together.
Getting Started
You can book your first appointment directly, or start with a free 15-minute intro call if you’d like to talk things through first. The intro call is optional: we’ll talk about your child’s needs and what working together could look like, with no pressure either way. At your first appointment, we take an in-depth look at your child’s medical history, dietary intake, and environmental and behavioral factors, then build a roadmap of specific, individualized steps. From there, follow-up visits or your program keep you moving toward your goals.
No. If you’re not sure, a free intro call is a good place to talk through your child’s needs and which type of support makes sense. You can also book a first appointment directly, and we’ll figure out the right fit together. Let’s chat!
Yes we do, see below for more information.
Our Services & Programs
We offer three ways to work together, our pediatric nutrition services include:
• A La Carte (1:1 visits): Flexible, visit-based support billed to insurance. Book appointments as needed. Best for one-time questions or straightforward concerns.
• Whole Child Nutrition Care: A 3-month program for any age or nutrition concern. Includes insurance-billed visits plus personalized support between visits, such as personalized dietary analysis, secure messaging, care coordination, and individualized resources. Best for complex or multi-provider needs, or families who want more support and connection between visits.
• Programs: Structured programs built around a specific age and concern, like The Mealtime Shift for picky eaters ages 2–5. We also offer workshops including Starting Solids and Youth Sports Nutrition.
Check out our WORK WITH US page.
We generally recommend focusing on one path at a time so your child gets the full benefit of a program’s structure and support. We’re happy to talk through what sequence makes the most sense for your family on your intro call. Built into our programs 1:1 nutrition sessions are part of the path.
Yes. We offer virtual workshops, including the Starting Solids Workshop for parents of babies 4–8 months and a Youth Sports Nutrition Workshop for parents and kids ages 8–18. To see all options check our WORK WITH US page!

Insurance & Payment
Yes. Kristen and Julia are currently in-network with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Cigna, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, and ConnectiCare/Emblem Health. Most plans offer some nutrition coverage, but benefits vary, so please verify your coverage before your first appointment.
We aren’t responsible for verifying your benefits or for claims denied by your insurance company.
We recommend calling the 800 number on the back of your insurance card and asking to speak with a representative from Member Services. Our Insurance Verification Guide walks you through exactly what to ask, including the codes to give them, and you’re welcome to print it and keep it handy during your call. Please note that verification of benefits does not guarantee payment. Your insurance company makes the final determination of coverage when the claim is processed.
Please verify your insurance benefits before your visit. We aren’t responsible for verifying your benefits or for claims denied by your insurance company.
We don’t require a referral to work with us. If using insurance, some plans require a referral or prior authorization before they’ll cover nutrition visits, so it’s worth asking when you verify your coverage. If your plan does require one, your child’s doctor can complete our Referral Form.
We welcome referrals from pediatricians and other healthcare providers. If you’re a physician, or a parent whose insurance plan requires a referral, you can download our Referral Form HERE.
When a referral is provided, the diagnosis code for your visit may come from it. Referrals also help us coordinate with your child’s healthcare team.
Please fax all referrals to: 855-975-2703
You’re responsible for any copays, deductibles, coinsurance, or other patient responsibility determined by your insurance plan. After your claim is processed, we collect the amount your plan determines is your responsibility. A credit card is left on file to process patient payments.
Please verify your insurance benefits before your visit. We aren’t responsible for verifying your benefits or for claims denied by your insurance company.
If your plan covers nutrition services but you have an unmet deductible, we still bill your insurance company for the visit. Because the claim is processed through your plan, you’re responsible for your insurance company’s allowed (negotiated) rate for that visit. The amount varies by carrier and plan, and may be different for an initial visit than for a follow-up. Your insurance company determines how much is applied to your deductible after the claim is processed. Submitting visits through your insurance allows visits to count towards bringing your deductible down.
Please note: the insurance company’s allowed rate is different from our standard self-pay rate and varies by carrier and individual plan.
For Whole Child Nutrition Care, insurance is billed for the nutrition visits within the 3-month program, just as it would be for standard 1:1 counseling, and a separate program investment covers the support that can’t be billed to insurance. For The Mealtime Shift, insurance may cover the medically necessary feeding therapy sessions, while the parent education and ongoing support aren’t typically reimbursed. You’ll find the details on each program’s page.
If your visits are limited, we’ll make the most of the time you have and set you up for success at home. If you’d like more support than visits alone provide, ask us about Whole Child Nutrition Care.
If we’re out-of-network with your insurance, including Oxford, Harvard, Tricare, and Husky, you’ll pay for your session at the time of service. We’re happy to provide a superbill and/or itemized invoice that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Reimbursement is based on your individual policy, so please call your insurance company’s Member Services number to find out how it works. You may want to ask:
• Do I have out-of-network nutrition benefits?
• What is my out-of-network deductible?
• What percentage of the visit is reimbursed?
• Do I need a referral or authorization?
• How do I submit a superbill for reimbursement?
We accept cash, check, credit/debit cards, HSA cards, and FSA cards. Please make checks payable to Kristen Smaldone, RD. Check with your plan administrator about what’s eligible under your HSA or FSA.
Your dietitian will take a credit card number at your first visit. If your claim is denied by your insurance company, or you have an outstanding copay, deductible, coinsurance, or other patient responsibility, your card may be automatically charged for the amount due.
Self-pay rates are as follows:
• Initial visit: $250 (approximately 60–90 minutes)
• Follow-up visit: $100 (approximately 30–45 minutes)
